After a short break, while Ace’s musical Tardis underwent its annual MOT and service, they’re back on board and reversing into 1964 for the latest instalment in the popular London American Year By Year series. By the mid-1960s, US hit makers were playing second fiddle to home-grown talent on the UK charts, thanks largely to the arrival of Beatlemania. But significant numbers of record buyers still looked to the US charts for their weekly fix of seven-inch vinyl, and London still remained the most important source for American hits for most of us. As ever, London’s repertoire for 1964 remained eclectic and brought us everything from Phil Spector s Wall Of Sound to Louis Armstrong, from country pop crossovers to old London favourites like Del Shannon and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The label released fewer singles in 1964 than in previous years, but the ratio of good to not so good ones still weighed heavily in favour of the former and here are 28 excellent examples of what London was all about. As ever, the content has been chosen to avoid significant overlap with existing Ace CDs, and most are making their Ace debut in this compilation. Sixteen of the 28 tracks were Hot 100 hits in the USA more than half of the total content. Wherever possible they have used the same tape that was used to master the original 45, and all tracks are heard in glorious mono, just as they were on those fantastic black and silver label singles.
